August 22, 2024: This Week in International Student News

Happy Thursday! We can hear the shuffle of new international students arriving on campuses across the country. Yes...it's that time again already.

The collective sigh of relief when you pass Customs and Border Protection...yes! I MADE IT.

And then...you step inside an "American college dorm room" 😅 Where is the kitchen...seriously?

We all lived in the dorms. It's kind of a "right of passage" for studying in the U.S.

It's really not that bad. It's the best way to meet American students...and hey, you're on campus. Keep an open mind...and if you have any questions, contact your residence hall staff.

Secondary Counselors and Universities Take Over London, Ontario, Canada

IACAC Conference London, Ontario

Our team was in Canada covering the...*takes deep breath*...

International Association for College Admission Counseling conference.

Or...International ACAC conference for short.

Secondary school counselors connect with representatives from universities and colleges worldwide to learn more so they can better advise students where they might want to study after graduation and how to apply.

These connections can prove extremely helpful for students looking to study in the U.S. or elsewhere. A secondary counselor may know the folks in charge of admitting international students!

In attendance:

520 secondary schools

300 universities in the U.S.

150 universities outside the U.S.

All we can say is....These guys know how to have a good time...and we also learned more about need-based financial aid options for international students offered by some universities.

IMMIGRATION CORNER

F1 visa for international students

Last week, we shared that, according to the Department of State, 609,000 student visas were issued in fiscal year 2023.

We got some follow-up information from the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, and the 609K number is based on:

F1, F2, M1, M2, and academic J1 and J2 visas. (Academic J means students, professors, scholars, etc.)

We were then curious about how many visa applications got denied in FY23...and found this handy document on the Department of State website. It highlights approval and denials for every single visa category.

More than 12 million visa applications got processed in FY23.
