Hey there, Superstar. I had the pleasure of attending the EducationUSA Forum in Washington, D.C., this year, and I thought you would enjoy seeing what I wrote up. Below is a copy of our weekly International Student Voice newsletter.
Our weekly newsletter aims to keep international students (prospective, current, and former) current on what's essential to international students in the U.S., access to tips and resources, news related to international students...and we throw in some fun stuff, too! (We all love a good meme, am I right?)
So, if it's okay with you, I'd like to keep you part of our community and have you receive our future weekly newsletters. If you have time that week, open our newsletter to see what's happening and, of course, share any ideas and feedback.
But hey, if your inbox is already cluttered, no hard feelings! You can unsubscribe at any time.
Thank you for everything you do for international students and the advancement of international education in the United States. Enjoy!

We attended the EducationUSA Forum in Washington, D.C....here's why you should care.

You may have heard of EducationUSA when you were first exploring studying in the United States. This is a branch of the U.S. Department of State, and they have centers worldwide helping students come to the U.S. to study.
Each year, they host a forum (fancy word for getting together to talk) that brings together EdUSA advisers worldwide, university and college representatives, and folks from the Department of State (the guys ultimately responsible for student visas). They talk about various topics...like country/regional trends, what students are looking for in programs, and...of course...visas.
For example, we learned that the Department of State issued nearly 609,000 student visas (F, M, and J) in FY23 (that's a lot of paperwork). Universities also had an opportunity to share concerns they had about the visa process.
We cover that discussion, the entire forum, and our major takeaways for international students. This forum matters because these folks are coming together to talk about YOU and your possible future.
Out of curiosity: Have you ever been denied a student visa? Did you receive an explanation for the visa denial verbally, written, or both? Reply and let us know.
IMMIGRATION CORNER

Check out these numbers. During the EdUSA Forum, a representative shared that nearly 609,000 student visas (F, J, and M) were issued in fiscal year 2023, and they broke it down by a few countries.
You can see more numbers on the Department of State website on the non-immigrant visa workload report in FY23. For example, for F-1 visas:
445,418 visas were issued
253,355 visas were denied
So, approximately 63% of F-1 visa applications were approved in FY23.
The Department of State actually lists some interesting reports, including a monthly report sharing data on the number of non-immigrant visas issued.
For example, in June 2024:
F-1 visas issued: 26,829
J-1 visas issued: 23,683
M-1 visas issued: 627
STUDYING IN THE U.S.

What is the difference between a university and a college?
In the U.S., we use the terms university and college interchangeably, but sometimes there is a difference.
